Step 1: Open Your Document in Adobe InDesign:
Launch Adobe InDesign and open the document containing your grayscale monotone graphic. Ensure that your graphic is placed in the document and positioned as desired.

Step 2: Select the Graphic: C
Using the Direct Selection tool (solid white arrow) Click on the grayscale monotone graphic to select it. You’ll notice the bounding box around the graphic indicating that it’s selected.

Step 3: Access the Color swatch Panel:
Navigate to the “Window” menu and select “Color” to open the Color swatches panel. This panel is your hub for managing colors in your InDesign project.

Step 4: Apply a Swatch or Create a New Color:
You can either choose a color swatch from your existing swatches or create a new color. To create a new color, click on the “New Swatch” icon in the Color panel. Adjust the color properties such as CMYK values or choose a color from the color picker.

Step 5: Apply Color to Graphic Elements:
With the graphic still selected, use the Swatches” Color panel to apply the chosen color to your monotone graphic. This will replace the grayscale tones with the selected color.

Step 6: Experiment with Blending Modes:
Enhance your design by experimenting with blending modes. Select the graphic, go to the “Effects” menu, choose “Transparency,” and explore different blending modes to see how they interact with your chosen color.

Step 7: Add Gradients or Tints:
For a more dynamic effect, consider applying gradients or tints to your colored graphic. Access the “Gradient” or “Tint” options from the Swatches or Color panel, and experiment with different settings until you achieve the desired result.

Step 8: Fine-Tune with Opacity:
Adjust the overall transparency of your graphic to control how much the underlying grayscale tones show through. You can find the opacity settings in the “Effects” menu under “Transparency.”

Step 9: Save and Export:
Once you’re satisfied with your colored monotone graphic, save your InDesign document and export it in your preferred format. For printing, this should be a PDF file. Use a PNG or JPG for online and social media.

This method is very handy for when you just need spot color or one color printing. (Only uses one color ink).

Conclusion:

By leveraging the color panel, blending modes, gradients, and other features, you can add depth and dimension to your designs.
