International Design Day

International Design Day is an annual event celebrated on April 27th to honor the importance of design in our daily lives. Design has the power to create positive changes in the world, and this day aims to recognize the contributions of designers worldwide. #DesignDay

The event was first established by the International Council of Design (ico-D), an organization that represents design professionals from around the world. The theme of World Design Day changes every year to reflect the current issues and trends in the design industry.

Celebrated since 1995, International Design Day commemorates the founding of the Council on April 27, 1963. Until 2020, this event was celebrated as World Design Day.

2023 theme:
peace. love. design!

2023, will be their 60th Anniversary, as we celebrate International Design Day with a theme that nods to the Council’s legacy as an organisation. The theme for this year is ‘Peace. Love. Design!’. Inspired by the activism of the sixties, we encourage you to explore issues of environmentalism, social equity, collective movements and radical change.

Design encompasses a wide range of fields, including graphic design, product design, architecture, and fashion design, among others. It is the process of creating something new, with a focus on form, function, and aesthetics. Good design should be both beautiful and functional, and it should serve a purpose beyond its appearance.

The impact of design on society cannot be overstated. Design can shape our experiences, our environments, and even our behaviors. For example, a well-designed public space can encourage community interaction and promote healthy living. A thoughtfully designed product can make our lives easier and more enjoyable. And a visually appealing graphic can convey important information in a clear and engaging way.

International Design Day is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of designers and to raise awareness about the importance of design in our world. It is also a chance to reflect on how design can be used to address global challenges such as climate change, social inequality, and public health.

One way to celebrate International Design Day is to attend local design events and exhibitions. Many cities around the world organize events to mark the occasion, showcasing the work of local designers and promoting design education. You can also participate in online events and webinars organized by design organizations and institutions.

Another way to celebrate International Design Day is to use design to make a positive impact in your community. Whether you’re a professional designer or a hobbyist, you can use your skills to create something that benefits your neighborhood, school, or workplace. For example, you could design a poster to raise awareness about a local issue, create a mural to beautify a public space, or organize a workshop to teach others about design.

Past themes:

  • 2022 theme: suspended in transition
  • 2021 theme: design for each and all
  • 2020 theme: be professional!
  • 2019 theme: women in design
  • 2018 theme: kids can too!

In conclusion, International Design Day is a day to celebrate the power of design to create positive change in our world. It is a time to recognize the contributions of designers and to raise awareness about the importance of design in our daily lives. So, let’s take this opportunity to celebrate design and to use it as a force for good.
